            100000 burials with 40000 inscriptions from 1711 to 2000

Owner: North Burial Ground Cemetery, 5 Branch Ave., Providence, RI 02904 (401) 331-0177

NOTE: This is a combination of three transcriptions:

             1. Frank Williamson (FW) done between 1857 and 1877 (in Arnold collection

                 295 pages, 5600 names)

             2. Frank Taylor Calef MD (1875-1941) (FTC) done in 1923 - 1500 pages, 7500 names

             3. John E. Sterling (JES) 1994-1997 - 30,000 names

Many single marble or slate stones recorded by FW were later replaced by granite

monuments. All of the data from transcriptions of both gravestone are included in this

record with corrections where needed. Data added, but not found on the gravestone, is

included in square brackets []. Where possible the map numbers assigned by Calef were

preserved. The last few sections he recorded he skipped many stones, so these have been

            renumbered.

This cemetery is 110 acres. It is the first public cemetery and oldest Providence

HISTORICAL CEMETERY #: PV004 LOCUST GROVE CEMETERY PROVIDENCE RI

Location: 15 ft ELMWOOD AVE at TEL pole # 48

            5500 burials with 3000 inscriptions from 1793 to 1995

NOTE: Established in 1848 by Amos D Smith, James Y Smith, William V Daboll and

other Elmwood real estate speculators. The cemetery was extensively planted with

shrubs and was surrounded by a hedge. Without the church affiliation Locust Grove

never acquired the status of its neighbor, Grace Church Cemetery. By the end of the

19th century sales of plots declined and, without funds, the maintenance deteriorated.

Maintained by City of Providence since 1978. Records at North Burial Ground office.

The burial records have been entered into the database from the original small six

notebooks, not the copy books taken from same in 1978. These notebooks are tattered and

some names have crumbled away. Plans are to go to the cemetery and add data from the

gravestones. The burial records give the burial date and the residence at time of death.

When this residence is other than Providence it has been entered as the death place.

Sometimes this is a hospital or nursing home. There are gravestones in this cemetery that

do not show in the records. copied by F T Calef (FTC) in 1925

            1000 burials

NOTE: This burial ground consisted of a collection of burial grounds including

the Proprietors' Burial Ground, the Field's Burial Ground, Isaac Manchester BG,

Thomas Sprague BG, Stephen K Rathbone and Seth Padelford BG, and the Beneficent

Congregational Society BG. It was located at the corner of Friendship and Beacon

streets, bounded by Plain, Friendship and Beacon Streets. The Proprietor's lot

contained 88,815 square feet or a little more than 2 acres but the whole complex

comprising the West Burial Ground was seventeen acres. When it was removed a

Hayward Park was put in its place.

The data for stones moved to Cranston in 1870 are from a transcription done by

W W Chapin May 13 1913 of stones taken from the West Burial Ground in Providence

to the Oakland Cemetery, Broad St Cranston, updated 1993 by John Sterling.

The West Burial Ground was located at the junction of I95 and I195. It was moved

from 1869-1888. 10 Jun 1877 the last bodies were removed from the Beneficent

Congregational Church Cemetery to lot 2342. On 31 Dec 1888 the last 110 bodies were

removed from the West Burial Ground and reinterred at North Burial Ground in a 1500

sq ft triangle purchased by the city of Providence. A 10 ft pyramid monument marks the
