            Directly south adjacent to this cemetery is a small lot containing Ned (1932-1945) who got "over 600 Woodcock"



            and March (1930-1945) who got "over 600 Woodcock".  These are hunting dogs belonging to George Briggs, the    



            previous owner.

                Sections A, C, and D have no marked burials.                                                              



                The new sections at the west edge of this cemetery were not recorded. All are 20th century burials.       



                The land for this cemetery was purchased by William B. Spencer April 23, 1858. Prior to 1857 this ground  



            was covered with pines, oak, chestnut and other trees, which were cut down. Boulders were removed and a stone 



            wall 2850 feet in length was built around a twelve acre lot. A gang of men worked for two years to prepare    



            this cemetery for Mr. Spencer, at a cost of $10,000. The original plan had 609 lots of 20 x 30 feet. The       



            original gate had nine foot high, 24" by 28" granite posts supporting two large iron gates. The gates are no  



            longer there in 1997. 260 feet from the entrance is a receiving tomb large enough to hold forty bodies. The   



            first body was put into the tomb October 23, 1858.                                                            



               There are 352 gravestones here that predate the cemetery. Many small farm cemeteries were moved here in the



            19th century

            Brown Lot, but this cemetery has the sign for 075.  The Brown Lot has been registered as CY129, and is        



            adjacent to CY074, Greene Lot.  Only 1 marked grave and 8 fieldstone graves.

            east of Carbuncle Pond, beside road, is a tomb which was built by Mr. Pevey.  It contains Mr. Pevey, his first



            wife, and a son-in-law." According to a 25 Jun 1955 newspaper article this is Hiram Peavey.                   



                This was a vault with two large granite blocks forming the roof and an iron gate in the front.  Vandals   



            broke in through the roof in the 1960s.  Dirt was then piled on top of the vault to keep vandals out.  All    



            that can be seen today (1997) is a dirt mound.

                According to Richard Siembab, "The Anthony church this refers to is the Knotty Oak Baptist Church, on the 



            corner of Rts. 116 and 117.  The old Coventry High School was located just past [north of] this church, on Rt.



            116.  The athletic field for the school was put in around 1949.  It's called Rice Field after the Rice        



            brothers who were in World War II service.  Several years ago I did business with a Mrs. Margaret Baker, who  



            lived for many years just about across from the old high school, and was a member of Knotty Oak Baptist       



            Church.  Her family was old Coventry stock.  Her and I traded a lot of Coventry trivia, and I remember her    



            telling me that a cemetery was moved when Rice Field was constructed.  No doubt this is the same cemetery..." 



            



                After this cemetery was registered in Coventry with the information supplied above it was discovered that     



            these Colvins are buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Plainfield, CT. They are descendants of Colvins buried in   



            Coventry.

            at this spot alongside Plainfield Pike. The spot is 25 feet west of telephone pole #33, on the south side of  



            the stone wall, just east of a large pine tree. This is between Waterman Hill Road and Sisson Road.

            1775 age 1, George T 1787 age 9m, William age 4m and an infant 1811) were moved to Woodland Cemetery. This    



            data from her original manuscript is also in the Arnold records with 2 omissions, (Arnold Vol 6. Book J page  



            1441), "Francis Brayton Burying Ground, Meeting House Lot Washington, R. I. before the yard was partly        



            demolished."

            Smith's was sold at public auction last Saturday morning to settle a long legal dispute. The cemetery which   



            was a small one, about seventy-three by ninety odd feet, owned by the twelve heirs of the original owners.    



            Some few years ago Stephen F. Richardson (or Richmond) purchased the rights and title of eleven of the heirs, 



            the twelfth refusing to sell. (deed book #36, page 51, June 6, 1898). The bodies were removed by Mr.          



            Richardson to a lot in the Woodland Cemetery as also were the stones and monuments that had been placed over  



            the graves." "The wall that was nearly demolished will be rebuilt to compare with the next lot owned by Mrs.  



            Phebe Johnson [Herbert A. Paine's mother]"                                                                    



                Benjamin Holden sold 27 acres of land to Thomas Whipple on 9 April 1849 but "not intending to convey the  



            burying place walled in upon said premises". (deed book #23, page 169)
