HISTORICAL CEMETERY #: CU001 ST PATRICK'S CEMETERY CUMBERLAND RI

            1544 burials with 1544 inscriptions

NOTE: Transcribed by Roger Beaudry between Sept 5, 1995 and April 20,

            1996.

HISTORICAL CEMETERY #: CU003 CUMBERLAND CEMETERY CUMBERLAND RI

Location: 10 ft north of DEXTER STREET at TEL pole # 25

            345 burials with 240 inscriptions from 1763 to 1972

NOTE: Generally in good condition, some stones have however been toppled either

by nature or vandalism. Some stones have also been destroyed. There is some

difficultly in locating the owner of this cemetery. The town claims not town

it, nor does it know who does. The neighbors claim that the town mows the grass,

so why would they unless they owned it. There are some newer burials in the

cemetery, so the owner will hopefully be found.

This cemetery has some sections which are set off from the rest of the cemetery

into family plots. The sections are as follows:

Section A: An area surrounded by granite posts with iron rails.

Section B: A large area surrounded by granite posts with iron rails.

Section C: An area surrounded by granite corner markers and slightly raised

                             by granite curbs.

Section D: An area surrounded by granite posts, no rails.

Section E: An area surrounded by granite posts, no rails.

Section F: An area outlined by granite blocks.

Ira B Peck transcribed lot in mid 1800's. He described lot as follows: From

the Burying ground near Robin Hollow so called in Cumberland, RI"

Dr Frank T Calef transcribed this lot as part of his Lincoln Transcription. He

assigned it Lot #27 and described it as "is in the yard of the Stone Church at

Lonsdale Village." This lot is well into the Town of Cumberland and is not near

any Stone Church. His transcription is found on pages 76 to 99.

Transcribed by Roger Beaudry January 29 to March 10, 1993

Transcribed by Ethel M White who simply described it as:

                   "Cumberland Cemetery - Lonsdale

Transcribed by Charles & Martha Benns in the early 1930's. Their

transcription can be found in Volume 1 Pages 157-158 and in Vol 6 page 46.

They assigned it number 129 and describe its location as on the road from

Adamsdale to Lonsdale. They have also recorded the few stones located in

CU004 and entered them under this cemetery.

HISTORICAL CEMETERY #: CU004 OLD INDIAN CEMETERY CUMBERLAND RI

Location: 25 ft north of DEXTER ST (CORNER OF CURRAN ROAD) at TEL pole # 28

            6 burials with 6 inscriptions from 1839 to 1847

NOTE: Cemetery is located at intersection of Dexter & Curran Road. It is

badly overgrown with weeds, trees, and briars. When visited on January 27, 1993

it was in terrible shape with only two stones found. I believe the home adjacent

to cemetery has begun to fill in a part of the cemetery for its own use. When I

spoke to a person who is familiar with the area, she indicated to me that she

remembered the cemetery being a bit larger and closer to the road. Being that

this cemetery is in a hollow and the neighbors land is quite a bit higher, it

is not difficult to believe they may have backfilled over a part of the cemetery.

The name of the cemetery "Old Indian" doesn't quite fit the cemetery.

It appears to be a run of the mill family burial site, one in which I am sure

            no Indian was ever buried.

Transcribed by Charles & Martha Benns in the early 1930's and recorded

along with the larger Cumberland Cemetery located adjacent to this one. Three

stones are recorded in volume 1 page 158. They also record a tomb which may have

been on this property at one time.

inscribed on the two doors to the tomb. The door on left contains three

names, the one on the right contains four. When visited on 11-17-92, cemetery

had recently been cleared. The project was very well done.

            12 burials with 4 inscriptions from 1779 to 1840

NOTE: A neighbor told me that a stone had been stolen a few years ago. He

attempts to police the lot, and questioned my presence. He was very helpful

            after I explained my purpose.

This cemetery was transcribed and recorded in Arnold records Volume 8,

page 98. The transcription made note of 3 unmarked graves in addition to the

3 listed. There is no name of the transcriber, but I am assuming it was Grace

Tillinghast. She recorded it thus: "On Cumberland Road from Arnold's

Mills to Cumberland Hill going North, on right hand side of road."

NOTE: This cemetery was transcribed in July 1932 and recorded in Arnold's

records volume 8 page 98. The transcriber is not listed, but I assume it to

be Grace Tillinghast. She recorded 11 stones and noted an additional 3

unmarked graves. She described the cemetery thus: "Just off Cumberland

tombstones which have been spray painted and two or three broken stones.

There are a large number of footstones leaning against trees and other stones.

At the dedication of the bronze plaque at the entrance to the cemetery,

Ms Judith Jencks Ray spoke about the cemetery and the Revolutionary War veterans

buried there. She also published a book in 1990 entitled "Founders &

Patriots of the Town of Cumberland RI" In this book she has printed a copy

of her speech, a copy of Ira Peck's list of those interred prior to 1800, and

some in-depth research into the service & civil record of those Revolutionary

War Veterans. It is from this book that I have drawn all data in regards to

            Revolutionary War veterans listed.

Ira B Peck recorded this cemetery in the mid 1800's. his description is as

follows: "From the Metcalf Burying Ground so called on Diamond Hill Plain in

            Cumberland."

Ethel White transcribed some stone in the mid 1930's.

Transcribed by Roger Beaudry between November 16, 1992 and January 26, 1993.

Transcribed by Charles & Martha Benns in the early 1930's. Their

transcription can be found in Volume I pages 124-132. They assigned it number 111.

At the end of their transcription they have the following paragraph. "Peck

cemetery was given by Ira B Peck, his sister Celinda Bishop, his brothers, William

& Joel Peck, and his grandfather Solomon Peck & wife Mercy Peck.

Transcribed by Grace G Tillinghast in July 1932. She describes it as follows:

"Peck Cemetery near Arnold's Mills. This is one of the oldest cemeteries I

have seen. Graves without a record are marked with a wooden marker. Many old

stones are well worth photographing. The epitaphs are seldom duplicated and are

unique." Her transcription can be found in Volume 8, pp 1-49 in Arnolds work.
