NOTE: James Arnold recorded part of this lot 12 Oct 1890 (Vol 3, Pg 178-197) In
lot beside the Catholic Church at Cranston Print Works, a burial yard very much
neglected, that of the Randall family and their connections. This is a 121 acre
modern Catholic cemetery with mostly 20th century burials. It is beyond the scope
of this project except for the few older stones that were moved into here.

NOTE: Incorporated in 1874 and the first burial was January 2 1877 - 390 stones in
this cemetery predate this indicating many cemeteries moved into this cemetery.
James Arnold recorded this cemetery 13 Nov 1892 (Vol 4, Pg 1-571) At Dyers Nursery is
a large cemetery known under the incorporation act as Pocasset which started out as the
family lot of Charles Dyer, which family lot has been enlarged several times but which
now is enclosed by a suitable fence. South and southeast of this are various lots which
have interments in them. The first in order will be the Dyer family enclosure which we
proceed to give in the first notes here following.

NOTE: 4 acres
George N. Briggs purchased land from Elizabeth Jenkes in 1847 and formed the cemetery
corporation the next year. In 1927 a granite mausoleum was built to accommodate 1200
burials. In the south central part of this cemetery is a collection of slate, sandstone
and marble gravestones moved from the West Burial Ground (PV019) in Providence in 1870.
only a few of the older gravestones have been recorded so far.

consists of a monument and 6 field stones. 30 bodies were moved 21 Jul 1975 and
placed in 5 graves (6 in each). One more was brought in Oct 1975 and placed into
grave #1. There was a family genealogy and papers from an 1866 family reunion in
Cranston at the old farm (some say a family bible) in a steel box in a compartment
in the monument put there in 1866. In 1975 when it was moved the box was opened to
reveal a wad of wet paper. The gravestones were taken by Robert Allen Greene for safe
storage in East Greenwich. James Arnold recorded this lot in its original location 12

is the Colvin lot (designated section B) surrounded by a stone wall 60 ft by 55 ft. Section
C was recorded by James Arnold in 1891 as the east yard.

NOTE: James Arnold visited the site of this lot 29 Nov 1890 (Vol 2, Pg 73) On the
Smith Palace Plat farm there was once two burial lots. The eastern one is now [1890]
leveled with the ground and nothing now marks the spot. Tradition says Throops and
other family connections were buried there. It was on the brow of the steep hill
that is directly west of the Palace.

NOTE: James Arnold visited this lot 12 Oct 1890 (Vol 3, Pg 149) In lot on the west
side of Spectacle Pond and between it and the railroad, a burial yard of the Fenner
family. Lot very well fenced and surrounded by a row of lindens and maples.
This cemetery shows on the plat map titled "Plan of part of the Almoran Harris
Estate, plan H" December 1874 at the Cranston City Hall. It is between the
railroad and Tongue Pond (not Spectacle Pond as stated by Arnold). There in nothing
left of this cemetery in its original location. Archaeological test trenches dug in
June 2000 did not find any evidence of this lot. A shopping center is to be built
here in 2001. recorded in 1912 by Louise Prosser Bates
The Fenners were removed to Locust Grove Cemetery in Providence (PV004) while the
Buntings and James were removed to Pawtuxet Highland Cemetery in Warwick (WK142)
George S Fenner purchased the south half of lot #197 in Locust Grove Cemetery on 18
Apr 1904. Charles & Martha Benns found the Col. Richard Fenner and wife Sarah
stones at Locust Grove Cemetery in 1933 (their #255)

NOTE: James Arnold visited this lot 5 Jul 1891 (Vol 2, Pg 180) On the Elder Richard
Knight farm on rear of his house, lot not very well protected, but which we understand
the family intend to restore the yard to first class order.
At #2233 Situate Avenue. Ten of the Knights were removed to Greenwood Cemetery in
Coventry (CY059) after 1904 (when James Arnold recorded Greenwood Cemetery) and
before 1954 when the current owner purchased the property. The previous owners names
Hughes purchased the land in 1905. The Knight graves were probably moved shortly
after this date. The present owner discovered four gravestones on the ground near
the barn and mortared into the chimney. The exact location of the cemetery is not
known, but the current owner, Simon V. DerMksian, built a stone wall in 1997 and reset
the four remaining stones in an appropriate area behind his orchard.
The fate of the six Sweet stones and the Tillinghast children is not known.

NOTE: James Arnold recorded this lot 12 Oct 1890 (Vol 3, Pg 159) At Arlington
beside the railroad the west side against which fence it abuts, a burial yard of
the Pitcher family, yard fenced yet much neglected. This lot is located 60 feet
east of the house at #10 Bain St. between the house and where the railroad tracks
used to run. The cemetery shows on the 1867/8 plat map #88. The home owner say
there have not been any gravestones visible in the 20 years he has lived there.
See William Pitcher 1841 deed to Jeremiah Fenner (vol 15, pp. 375/6) "...reserving
a lot of land for a burying place for myself, my wife and children when the burying
place now is on said and bounded by the following lines viz. beginning at the southeast
corner of land heretofor conveyed by me to the grantee hence easterly as the fence now
stands seventy feet to a stone set in the ground thence northerly at right angles with
the first line forty feet then westerly parallel with the first line seventy feet thence
southerly forty feet to the first mentioned place of beginning with a privilege passing
to and from the road to the same, doing as little damage as may be."

the digging of a trench for the waterline to two new houses on Charles Street.

been disturbed and it is quite likely that they were removed to this location.
They possibly came from a small farm cemetery at #56 Scituate Ave. that was the
subject of an earlier newspaper article in 1964.

Lot known also as the Nicholes place at the Ore Bed was a yard now plowed down
the past spring. We have been told that the late John Nicholes, known as "Keg
John", mother, father and grandparents were buried here also several of the
Gortons and some Westcotts. On a stone removed from the burial yard we read:
His farm was on the south side of Plainfield Pike adjacent to Joseph Fenner and
Zuriel Waterman.

of the Knightsville Station and a short distance from the railroad bridge there
is quite an extended burial lot of the poor who died on the Town
farm. We understand that the first burial of the poor on this farm was precisely
where the railroad bridge now is and were removed here when the railroad was built.
